There are a number of difficulties associated with assessing the competencies of seafarers on board against criteria identified in STCW and other standards. It is vital that the assessors themselves are fully competent to be able to complete the task, otherwise the assessment is flawed and meaningless.

The module builds on the introduction to assessment principles covered in e-learning module #0263, Principles of assessment.

Outlining the fundamental principles of assessing seafarers on board ship, this module gives users the underpinning knowledge to prepare for and carry out an effective observational assessment of a seafarer’s competence, including the use of questioning and listening techniques to assess knowledge and understanding.

Learning objectives:

  • State the fundamental principles of assessment
  • Describe effective oral questioning and listening techniques
  • Describe the preparations required to allow an assessor to carry out an observational assessment
  • Formulate meaningful, unambiguous objective oral questions
  • Describe how to carry out an observational assessment
