Electric propulsion, Systems for ships

STCW 2010 requires OOW engineers to have knowledge of electrical motors and starting technologies, and need to be able to detect faults.

The aim of this course is to ensure that those in charge are competent to recognize and manage electric propulsion systems. This means they need to be able to recognize the system features and understand ‘load diversity’ and other important topics.

Learning objectives:

• Know the various types of electrical propulsion system currently in use
• Know the benefits of electric propulsion compared to conventional propulsion systems
• Know what is meant by load diversity
• Know the system features
• Know how electric propulsion systems interface with other systems
