Inspection and maintenance of safety equipment

In the event of an emergency, safety equipment can be the difference between life and death. When it is poorly inspected and maintained, it can fail at the moment it is needed, potentially leading to fatalities. Inspection and maintenance of safety equipment is a risk management task that requires human judgement. For it to be effective, the individual needs to take personal responsibility and ensure that the equipment is fit for purpose.

The aim of course is to emphasize the importance of personal responsibility in effective inspection and maintenance. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety and ensure that all safety equipment is in good working order.

• Recognize that one of the reasons safety equipment failures occur, are lapses in human behavior.
• Identify that inspection and maintenance of safety equipment must be undertaken by trained, competent personnel
• Identify the typical basic checks to carry out on safety equipment and the common faults that might be found.
• Recognize personal responsibility to “stop the job” to prevent use of suspect safety equipment.
