This module gives a brief overview on the roles of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) with respect to maritime conventions. Special emphasis is given on the four pillars of the global maritime regulatory system, how the flag states and port states implement these conventions, and some recommendations and state legislations related to fatigue, safe manning, and human factors. Learning objectives:

• Recognize the individual and collaborative roles of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labor Organization (ILO) with respect to maritime conventions
• Become aware of the applications and interconnections of the different international maritime conventions
• Describe how maritime conventions are implemented by the flag and port state
• Explain the different recommendations and state legislation related to fatigue, safe manning, and human factors
