Fuel oil bunkering, Effective practice and sampling

Bunker operations has been a reason for several accidents and pollution in the past.  The fuel oil also represents great value and ??if the ship orders the wrong type, quantity, or the fuel oil is not according to the specifications it will represent a large loss and can cause machinery problems or breakdown which may delay the ship.

The main aim with this module is to improve awareness and reduce risks related to bunkering operations. It will also focus on reducing unnecessary cost as a consequence of poor bunkering and on how to be more environmentally friendly.

Learning objectives:

• Recognize the consequences of poor bunkering management
• Identify the procedures required for safe bunkering and protection of the environment during bunkering
• State how to correctly order, monitor and calculate the quantity and quality of bunker fuels
• State the requirements for bunker sampling and how MARPOL requirements for sampling are achieved
