This course covers the procedures used when a ship loads dry bulk cargoes: using the ship-shore safety checklist, the documentation required, the loading and distribution of cargo, duties of the watchkeepers and an introduction to cargo loading calculations. This will be particularly useful for deck officers who have not previously sailed on dedicated bulk carriers.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the importance of good ship-to-terminal co-ordination before the loading begins
  • Describe how the amount of cargo loaded is determined
  • Identify the documentation necessary before and after the loading
  • Identify the factors that affect the amount and position of cargo that can be loaded
  • Recognize the duties of the deck watch keeper during the cargo loading operation
