Passage planning with ECDIS

Navigation of vessels is moving away from the traditional method using paper charts towards the use of electronic charts and integrated electronic navigation systems. This trend requires that Masters and Navigating Officers are able to use and operate Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems, ECDIS.

Also, the 2010 Manila amendment to STCW require that Masters and Watchkeeping Navigating Officers sailing with ECDIS are qualified in its use.

This course will introduce the user to passage planning with ECDIS from preparation to passage making to data recording. The various tools available to the Operator are looked at which will enable an efficient use of ECDIS on a vessel.

• Preparing ECDIS for passage planning, including its use for passage appraisal
• Creating a route on ECDIS, various methods and tools available
• The use of ECDIS for route monitoring and data recording
