Sewage treatment systems

Sewage treatment gets less attention than oil or air pollution, but sewage is a threat to the environment and to the health of those on board. IMO MEPC.277(64) states that: Administrations are reminded that ship staff training should include familiarization in the operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant.

To ensure that learners are aware of the regulatory requirements regarding sewage treatment, that they understand the principles of sewage storage and treatment and are aware of the dangers that can arise if sewage is not treated correctly.

Learning objectives:

• Recognize the threats to the environment from untreated sewage
• List the conditions that must be met before discharging sewage overboard
• Identify the options for the storage or treatment of sewage
• Know what measures are used to check if sewage treatment has been effective
• Know what dangers can arise if sewage is not stored or treated properly (anaerobic activity, poisonous and toxic gasses)
