Introduction to bulk carriers

This course covers the safe and efficient carriage of dry bulk cargoes. It introduces the learner to the design features of dedicated bulk carriers, ore carriers and combination carriers. The commonly used regional size designations (‘Kamsarmax’ etc.) and the typical cargoes carried by them are discussed. Reference is made to the fundamental principles of chartering and sub-chartering, the Hague Visby Rules and the responsibilities they place on the ship, and the actions needed from the crew to minimize the chances of cargo claims.
