Problems arise on board ships every day and seafarers are confronted with challenges that can be difficult to overcome. Without adequate resilience, seafarers are unable to bounce back from setbacks and fail to ensure the continued safe operation of the vessel.
The first module in Seagull Maritime’s series on Resilience introduces the concept of resilience and the effects that real and perceived dangers have on the human body. Focusing on the topics of positivity, perspective and confidence, the module identifies ways to develop resilience so that individuals are prepared when things don’t go to plan.
Learning objectives:
- Outline what is meant by resilience with regards to safety performance
- Describe the impact of perspective when considering the theme of resilience
- Outline the effects of the fight, flight or freeze response in challenging situations
