With Global warming, there has been an increased use of the Arctic region especially, by all elements of the maritime community; commercial, military, scientific and recreational. This has led to revised requirements for crew in STCW with amendments. This course can be used as training for engineer officers unfamiliar with operation in cold climates and updating knowledge for engineer officers in accordance with STCW requirements.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize those cold water regions which are special areas or sensitive sea areas in MARPOL and know the precautions which must be taken
  • Recognize ice types and ice-classes for ships and know that only ships designed for the conditions can operation in certain types of ice
  • Identify common propulsion and steering systems used in ice affected waters
