Liquefying cargoes

35,00

The improper loading of solid bulk cargoes, cargo liquefaction effects and inadequate communication between the shipper and the Master, are resulting in a number of accidents. The Master must always monitor the weather conditions before loading commences for iron ore, nickel ore and other concentrate cargoes.

This course deals with the dangers of carrying cargoes that might liquefy during the voyage, so making the ship unstable, with the possibility of total loss of the ship, its cargo and crew.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the particular hazards and precautions associated with the carriage of IMSBC Code Group A cargoes (cargoes which may liquefy)
  • Identify what actions the master can take if there is a risk that a cargo may liquefy
  • Identify the various types of dry bulk carrier
  • Identify how the likelihood that a particular cargo will liquefy during the voyage can be determined
